Operation Politically Homeless (OPH) is an outreach project that attempts to draw those who feel "politically homeless"--alienated by both the Republican and the Democratic parties--to the Libertarian Party. The primary tool of Operation Politically Homeless is the World's Smallest Political Quiz. Developed by the Advocates for Self-Government, the WSPQ features ten opinion questions to which the respondant can answer either "yes," "no," or "maybe/need more information." Using the answers to these questions, the OPH volunteer can determine in which area of the Nolan Chart--left (liberal), right (conservative), "top" (libertarian), or "bottom" (authoritarian)--the person's political outlook falls. Each OPH table features a large Nolan Chart on a wall or on an easel, with stickers marking the results gathered that day. The main purpose of the World's Smallest Political Quiz is to identify people who might like information about the Libertarian Party, but it also serves to show some respondants that although they may consider themselves to be liberals or conservatives, they are actually more libertarian than anything else. Many people hold libertarian opinions, generally finding themselves disagreeing with each major party about half the time, but simply don't know that the Libertarian Party exists. The Libertarian Party of New York operates an OPH table at Grand Central Station approximately once every three months, and at other places and events as time and resources permit. If you have an idea for a location, please bring it to our attention! Usually any place frequented or passed by a large number of people is good, and events that are attended by people who have been recently short-changed by the government (gun owners, gays, business owners, Internet users) are ideal. Some Libertarians have even set up OPH booths at Republican or Democratic events! Please let us know soon enough in advance for us to obtain permits, licenses, floor space, or whatever. Of course, you can lend credibility to your OPH idea by volunteering to help staff it.
