"Gay Pride Festival,
New York City, NY,
June 30, 1996"
Written by Zev Cero

Zev Cero of the LPNY organized an OPH table at the Gay Pride festival in New York City. Zev said that he got the idea at the last Gay Pride festival, where "the political spectrum ranged from the Socialist Party to the Socialist Workers Party." The idea was given a boost by President Clinton, who recently had made public his intent to sign the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, which would prohibit same-sex marriages.

The OPH table ended up being right next to that of an organization promoting safe B&D and S&M practices, staffed by a collection of tattooed men in black leather and chains. A man in a raincoat stood outside, asking people, "Do you like to be tied up?" We thought it rather amusing, as well as a boon of sorts; imagine what a Republican outreach group would have thought!

During the first hour, rain poured from the sky, soaking all the literature as well our clothes, and the wind blew down the Nolan Chart at least a thousand times. It became impossible to fill out the WSPQ forms because the pens wouldn't work. Fortunately, before too long it stopped raining, and the literature dried out before the crowds from the parade started pouring in.

By 8 PM, we had passed out hundreds of flyers--in fact, we ran out of a number of them--and over 80 people had taken the World's Smallest Political Quiz.  Although we expected that the attendees would be a fairly liberal crowd, we were amazed that not one person wound up in either the conservative or authoritarian regions! One person did land in the authoritarian area, almost at the very bottom, but expressed shock when his position was plotted and changed his answers. The scores were split almost evenly between the liberal, libertarian, and centerist regions. We collected dozens of addresses.

Overall, the OPH table was quite a success! We will certainly do it again next year, this time making sure to bring much more literature. And, of course, an umbrella!
