What I learned doing OPH on Sunday -- People Agree With Us

A surprising number of People of Color, as the term is these days, responded positively to the words, "Free Trade" on the World's Smallest Political Quiz. Didn't like business and farm subsidies. Lesbian POCs were the most inclined to strongly want the government to stop "helping" because it doesn't work. Surprisingly, they also thought minimum wage laws were manure. I cannot say that lesbians or POCs generally agree, but some I met did.

Surprisingly, a number of people at the Same Sex Non-Shame festival replied "Maybe" to whether laws restricting sex between consenting adults should be repealed. Ditto removal of all government controls on media and the Internet. Those people appeared to be contemplating whether there were some instances in which laws would be appropriate, as they were when contemplating drug law repeal.

By the time I left, around 4 PM, our graph of respondents showed mostly "Liberal" but there were nearly as many Libertarians. People really liked it when I said, "You're a Libertarian!". As you might guess, only a few were solidly Libertarian on economic issues. The vast majority of course didn't believe right off the back minimum wage laws cause unemployment.

And the vast majority of people had never examined these questions, just as I had not.

Coincidentally, I have been chatting up a Puerto Rican technician I work with. He's a former Chief Petty Officer who served as a sonar tech on subs (coincidentally what I was to do had I not been bounced; small world). In our discussions of the structure of government he rattled off a litany of observations I might have heard here. All from personal observations in life, including supply and demand as pertains to housing.

He is convinced that the rich screw the poor and he doesn't like it, expressing admiration for Pancho Villa. Said he would not go so far as to shoot anyone. But did want to tax the Hell out of the rich in reprisal. When I pointed out the conflict between his observation that rent regulation sucked, that the free market works, and his other statements, he said he'd think about it.

Well, I hope our strategic egghead types are looking at the population numerically and wondering how we can approach the majority. I'm just some guy, and I'm wondering what would work. If we were to win the ghettoes, the Democrats would be screwed. I am from a ghetto and the Democrats don't help the people who live in them.

Best regards,

Theron
